On-line Learning Update (January 5 - 8, 2021)

 

Mme Ireland will send an email through School Messenger on Friday, December 18th with information and instructions regarding our on-line learning week (January 5 -8) as well as the daily for Google Meet times.  This email will detail the specifics of how and when attendance will be taken for the week and our daily video lessons. Students and parents should familiarize themselves with Google Classroom (this is where they will access their daily learning tasks) as well as Google Meet (this is where we will gather as a class via video chat). 

Students are coming home today with some learning materials needed for the week.  Please keep them in a safe place (probably best to just keep them in the blue dossier until needed)!

Le coin français 

What a wonderful few weeks it has been learning about family traditions and what everyone's plans are for the holidays.  There appears to be a lot of skiing, tobogganing, snowshoeing, skating and watching movies.  Relax and enjoy!  

Les Etudes Sociales

Today we enjoyed our artefact gallery walk and had a chance to see the many wonderful traditions of our grade one peers.  Sharing across the classes, helps create a sense of connection and belonging within our school and grade community.  Merci Mme Janet et Mme Lisa et les élèves! There were some pretty neat things to see. 

Les mathématiques

As  a class, students brainstormed a gift list and then chose five items from that list to create their own personalized "wish list".  Each item was assigned a price tag. Students were then "given" $20 to spend.  They had to decide which gifts they could purchase with the twenty dollars.  Students used a variety of tools, such as the number path to keep track of their calculations and then showed their math in number sentences. 

This week we also toured the school and looked at all the wonderful window art to get us into the holiday spirit.  There was some great creativity shown by all.

Le coin français

We have finished the alphabet now and looked at our first "complex sound". The "ch". 

Students generated a list of words that contain this sound.  Please ask them to share 5 words with you.  The "ch" can be found at the begin of words, but also in the middle. It sounds like someone asking you to "be quiet" because a baby is sleeping.  Did you know the "h" is silent/muet in french?  Yes, we don't pronounce it, but it acts as a partner with the letter "c" to make the "ch" sound.  

Les mathématiques

This week we looked at subtraction and learned that it is the opposite of addition.  You need to have a big number to start and then you take away from that big number to find the "difference" or what is left.  Here is a sample of the problem we looked at this week. Ask your child to tell you how they drew the problem, wrote the math sentence and then answered the question with a written sentence.  

L'art/science

Students enjoy a guided drawing of the eye this week and looked at several optical illusions. The eyes allow us to not just see, but experience the world around us. 

We also did a window panel drawing of what animals and people are doing in winter. Next week we will look at plants and weather as part of our seasonal changes unit.  

Potpourri                          

It has been an exciting and silly week with our new friend, Sylvain le lutin. He has been visiting our class daily and leaving us little notes.  We find him in the strangest of places.  He loved our jokes so much the other day that he decided to play a joke on us.   

Next Week - Remember it is festive clothing week Monday - Wednesday and Friday is" le journée Pyjama!

Thank you for making the time to connect during Parent Teacher Conferences.  It was a pleasure to speak with you all and share progress and next steps in learning. Please make sure to review the December Newsletter sent out this week for important updates about our learning this month.

We have been reviewing some of our COVID safety protocols this week in an effort to remind ourselves of the roles and responsibilities we play in keeping ourselves and others safe. 

While it is not normal to keep our distance from one another, it is normal to keep our hands to ourselves.
Students are learning how to play tradition "tag" games using new and creative strategies and are strengthening their understanding of personal space, protecting their personal bubble and using our words to communicate effectively.

We had a lot of fun estimating how many seeds were inside the pumpkin. Students had an opportunity to make and record their best estimate. Mme Ireland then gave each student some seeds to count. We tallied up the total number of seeds using a counting on strategy and discovered there were 88 seeds in total.  Mme Ireland then took the pumpkin home, cooked it up and made soup!
 

Students worked on many math tasks this week including a discussion on the attributes of shapes and how we might sort them.  Ask your child to tell you one thing they learned about the many shapes we discussed.  Student then had some free time to create an image or structure using those shapes. Can you see the patterning?  What similarities do squares and rectangles have? What differences do hexagones and octogones have?
