La semaine de la Terre

Things got a little "wild" this week!  It was great to see everyone wearing their blue and green and animal/plant printed clothing.  

Bravo tout le monde! Great job on the litter lunch this week.  Our garbage can only had three items in it at the end of the day. Students really enjoyed our "heure sans lumières" and we tried it several times throughout the week.  We learned that small acts "les petits gestes" can make a BIG difference. 

Students listened to many Earth Day themed stories this week and completed the rough draft of their Earth Day Poem. They also worked on a four part Earth sketch showing the many layers and parts of this spectacular planet, we call home.  We will add the watercolour next week and display both the poem and art work together for the whole school to see. 

Science/Math/Health/Physical Education/FLA/Social Studies

It is amazing how many subjects you can cover in one outing!

Earth Day Coulee Trip
Thanks to Mrs. Gainor and Mrs. Glowacki for joining us on our walk. The Coulee was awesome and students participated in a variety of Earth Day activities including: Place magique (sit spot) where they engaged in a guided meditation using the five senses, les mini mondes magnifiques (creating mini worlds using natural loose parts), la chasse des formes (shape finding), structure building and some good old fashioned exercise!   Here is a. video and some photos to enjoy!

*** Family Interview Project Sheets are due on Monday! We will begin our phrasing work next week. 

Students worked on a variety of writing projects this week, labelling, writing sentences and verifying their work.  We revisited the soft and hard "C" and "G" sounds and how the various vowels change the sound. Ask your child to tell you what vowel follows the c and g to make the soft sound and what vowels and/or consonants follow the c and g to make the hard sound.

Les mathématiques

We have begun exploring the attributes of 2-D shapes. Students learned important vocabulary,  compared the number of sides (côtés) and vertices (sommets) for each shape. They then worked with geoboards to create a variety of shapes. 

Science/études sociales

What fun students had creating a rural community this week using natural loose parts. They then compared the two communities they created (urbaine et rurale) and discussed their observations with classmates. 

They have also been learning about the three R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)

Recycler, réutiliser et réduire en français!

They have been watching some cool videos from the City of Calgary about recycling and composting and have been deciding which items go in which cart, with the goal being to have the least amount of "waste" in the black bin!

La semaine de la Terre - Earth Week

Next week are celebrating all things about the Earth. Students brainstormed ideas and came up with ways to celebrate the earth each day next week. Take a look at their "schedule" of events.

Le coin français

Students have been learning about Spring.  Each day they enjoy a story read aloud by Mme Ireland. Daily read alouds allow students to practice several skills including: active listening, predicting and inference skills, story comprehension, connecting to previous experiences, vocabulary development and questioning skills.  There is also great joy and enjoyment when a story is read aloud in class.

The home reading program is another important tool for reading success.  Students are expected to be reading every day at home. Students were reminded today that home reading "kits" must look like the posted photo!  Please make sure that all books are coming back to school in a Ziploc bag with the student's caterpillar book mark.  This ensure a "smooth" system of getting new books back into the hands of students quickly, with accurate tracking and quarantine procedures.  Helping your child develop good organizational skills by following the expected instructions is most appreciated!  As mentioned above, it is essential that students are reading everyday! Try setting a schedule that allows for 10 minutes of reading practice per night at home and remember that variety is the key to reading success.               Here is a suggested schedule: 

Monday - Home reading (first reading)

*** Send books back to school on Monday morning for a new selection

Tuesday - Mots globaux (sight words)

Wednesday - Home reading (second and third reading)

Thursday - Library Book Bedtime Stories 

Friday -  Je lis on line levelled books (remember to read each book three times)

Science et études sociales 

This week, students explored the concept of urban and rural communities.  After an extensive brainstorming session students then built their own "communauté urbaine" using a variety of materials. Students labelled some of the buildings and worked collaboratively with peers to create their city.  They are excited about building a rural community next and comparing the two. Ask your child to tell you something they learned about our key vocabulary: communauté urbaine/communauté rurale. These concepts also helped plant the seed for our April/May oral language project on "How the past informs the present". 
Students came home with an interview sheet that will get things rolling with this fun new project.
